At a Glance
The Tzolkin is the 260-day Mayan sacred calendar — the heart of the Mesoamerican calendar system. It combines 20 solar glyphs (archetypal energies) with 13 galactic tones (cosmic intentions), creating 260 unique combinations called "kin." Each person is born into a specific kin — their galactic signature — which describes their energetic mission and role in the cosmic fabric. The Mayan system is one of the most sophisticated ever created, with remarkable astronomical precision, but its use as a self-knowledge tool falls under cultural tradition, not science. The most widespread modern version is the Dreamspell, a reinterpretation by Jose Argüelles (1987).
This content is informational. The Mayan calendar is a traditional and cultural system. The Dreamspell is a modern interpretation, not an exact historical reconstruction.
How It Works
The 20 Solar Glyphs (Solar Seals)
Each glyph represents an archetypal energy — a fundamental quality of being:
- Red Dragon (Imix) — birth, primal trust, nurturing
- White Wind (Ik) — communication, spirit, breath
- Blue Night (Akbal) — dream, intuition, inner abundance
- Yellow Seed (Kan) — potential, flowering, awareness
- Red Serpent (Chicchan) — life force, instinct, kundalini
- White Worldbridger (Cimi) — transformation, letting go, bridge between worlds
- Blue Hand (Manik) — healing, accomplishment, knowledge
- Yellow Star (Lamat) — beauty, harmony, art, elegance
- Red Moon (Muluc) — water, purification, emotions, flow
- White Dog (Oc) — love, loyalty, heart, compassion
- Blue Monkey (Chuen) — play, magic, illusion, creativity
- Yellow Human (Eb) — free will, wisdom, influence
- Red Skywalker (Ben) — exploration, expansion, quest
- White Wizard (Ix) — receptivity, timelessness, enchantment
- Blue Eagle (Men) — vision, creativity, elevated perspective
- Yellow Warrior (Cib) — intelligence, questioning, courage
- Red Earth (Caban) — synchronicity, navigation, earth force
- White Mirror (Etznab) — reflection, truth, endlessness
- Blue Storm (Cauac) — catalysis, transformation, self-generation
- Yellow Sun (Ahau) — illumination, universal fire, mastery
The 13 Galactic Tones
Each tone represents an intention or quality of creation:
| Tone | Name | Quality |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Magnetic | Attract, unify, purpose |
| 2 | Lunar | Polarize, stabilize, challenge |
| 3 | Electric | Activate, bond, service |
| 4 | Self-Existing | Define, measure, form |
| 5 | Overtone | Command, empower, radiance |
| 6 | Rhythmic | Organize, balance, equality |
| 7 | Resonant | Channel, inspire, attunement |
| 8 | Galactic | Harmonize, model, integrity |
| 9 | Solar | Pulse, realize, intention |
| 10 | Planetary | Produce, manifest, perfection |
| 11 | Spectral | Dissolve, release, liberation |
| 12 | Crystal | Dedicate, universalize, cooperation |
| 13 | Cosmic | Endure, transcend, presence |
The Galactic Signature
The combination of a glyph and a tone = one kin. Example: "Cosmic Red Serpent" = Red Serpent glyph + tone 13 (Cosmic). There are 260 unique kins. The birth kin is calculated from the date of birth using Dreamspell tables.
What It Reveals (and What It Doesn't)
The Tzolkin offers a cyclical and energetic view of existence. Each day carries a specific energetic quality, and each person embodies a unique combination of these qualities.
What it offers: a poetic and profound framework for understanding one's energetic mission, challenges and gifts. The "wavespell" system (13 days) offers cycles of intention. The concepts of destiny kin, guide and antipode enrich relational dynamics.
What it doesn't do: predict events, measure personality traits, or provide scientific evidence. The Dreamspell version differs from the traditional Mayan Tzolkin still used by some indigenous communities in Guatemala.
Connection with Shinkofa
Within the Shinkofa ecosystem, the Mayan calendar is part of the holistic profile as a complementary system. The galactic signature is calculated from the date of birth. Combined with Human Design and other systems, it offers an additional layer of understanding — that of energetic mission and natural cycles.
Going Further
- The 5 castles and 4 colors — the Tzolkin is structured into 4 colors (Red/White/Blue/Yellow) and 5 castles of 52 days, each castle having an initiatory theme
- Wavespells — 13-day cycles offering a progression of intention, from purpose (tone 1) to transcendence (tone 13)
- The Haab and the Long Count — the other Mayan calendars: the Haab (365 days, civil) and the Long Count (great historical periods, source of the famous "2012 prophecy")
