At a Glance
The bodygraph can seem intimidating — 9 centers, 36 channels, 64 gates, numbers everywhere. But reading it is simpler than it appears if you follow the right order. This guide walks you through step by step, from the most fundamental (your type) to the most subtle (your variables).
Step 1: Your Type (the foundation)
This is the first thing to look at. Type determines your strategy — the correct way to interact with the world.
| What You See | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Sacral Center colored + no motor→Throat connection | Generator — wait to respond |
| Sacral Center colored + motor→Throat connection | Manifesting Generator — respond then inform |
| No Sacral colored + motor→Throat connection | Manifestor — inform before initiating |
| No Sacral colored + no motor→Throat connection | Projector — wait for invitation |
| No center colored | Reflector — wait a lunar cycle |
Step 2: Your Authority (the compass)
Authority is your decision-making mechanism. Look at which centers are defined:
| Priority | Defined Center | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Solar Plexus | Emotional — never decide immediately |
| 2 | Sacral Center (Generators) | Sacral — the gut response |
| 3 | Spleen | Splenic — immediate instinct |
| 4 | Heart/Ego | Ego — willpower |
| 5 | Self-G | Self-Projected — listen to yourself speak |
| 6 | None of the above | Mental/Environmental |
| 7 | No center (Reflector) | Lunar — 28 days |
Authority is hierarchical: if you have a defined Solar Plexus, that's your authority, even if you also have a defined Sacral.
Step 3: The Centers (energy)
Colors
- Colored (defined) = reliable, constant energy that belongs to you
- White (undefined) = reception zone, amplification, and potential wisdom
What to Observe
Count your defined and undefined centers. The more undefined centers you have, the more receptive you are to others' energies — this isn't weakness, it's a capacity.
| Many defined (6-9) | Many undefined (6-9) |
|---|---|
| Constant and predictable energy | Variable energy depending on environment |
| Less influenceable | Very perceptive, energetic chameleon |
| Risk: rigidity | Risk: identity confusion |
Step 4: The Profile (the role)
The profile is the two-digit number (like 1/3, 4/6, 5/1). The first digit is your conscious line (the costume you wear), the second is your unconscious line (the underlying life theme).
Quick summary of the 6 lines:
- The Investigator — needs foundations
- The Hermit — natural talent
- The Martyr — learning through trial
- The Opportunist — influence through network
- The Heretic — others' projections
- The Role Model — wisdom in 3 phases
Step 5: The Channels (gifts)
Look at the colored lines between centers. Each complete channel (both ends colored) is a fixed gift:
- Black channels (left side of bodygraph) are conscious — you know them
- Red channels (right side) are unconscious — others see them before you
- Striped channels (black + red) are both — partially conscious
A complete channel connects two centers and makes both defined.
Step 6: The Gates (nuances)
The small numbers in the centers are your activated gates. Each gate adds nuance:
- A gate with its complementary gate = complete channel = active gift
- A gate without its complementary gate = magnetic potential = you attract people with the other side
Gates are numbered 1 to 64 and correspond to I-Ching hexagrams.
Step 7: Definition (circulation)
Definition describes how energy flows between your defined centers:
| Type | What It Means | Experience |
|---|---|---|
| Single | All defined centers connected in one block | Fluid, self-sufficient energy |
| Split | Two separate blocks of defined centers | Need others to "bridge" blocks — magnetic relationships |
| Triple Split | Three separate blocks | Great need for interaction to activate all energy |
| Quadruple Split | Four separate blocks | Rare — need rich environment to fully function |
| None (Reflector) | No defined centers | Completely open, reflects environment |
The split creates a magnetic attraction toward people who have the channels/gates completing your blocks.
Step 8: The Planets (activations)
On the sides of the bodygraph, two columns of numbers:
- Black column (right) = your Personality design (conscious) — calculated from exact birth time
- Red column (left) = your Design design (unconscious) — calculated 88 days before birth
Each line shows a planet and the gate it activates:
| Planet | Influence | Importance |
|---|---|---|
| ☉ Sun | 70% of your energy, your central theme | Most important |
| ☊☋ Nodes | Life direction, environment | Very important |
| ☽ Moon | What drives you | Important |
| ☿ Mercury | Communication | Moderate |
| ♀ Venus | Values, relationships | Moderate |
| ♂ Mars | Action energy | Moderate |
| ♃ Jupiter | Law, philosophy | Background |
| ♄ Saturn | Discipline, lessons | Background |
| ♅ Uranus | Innovation, disruption | Background |
| ♆ Neptune | Spirituality, illusion | Background |
| ♇ Pluto | Deep transformation | Background |
The conscious + unconscious Sun = the two most influential gates in your design.
Step 9: Variables (advanced level)
The 4 arrows at bodygraph corners (see dedicated article):
- ↖ PHS (digestion)
- ↙ Environment
- ↗ Perspective (cognition)
- ↘ Motivation
This is the last level — explore it after integrating steps 1-8.
Recommended Reading Order
For a complete beginner:
- Type + Strategy — how to interact with the world (1 week of experimentation)
- Authority — how to make decisions (1 month of observation)
- Profile — your role in life (reading + reflection)
- Undefined centers — your conditioning zones (ongoing observation)
- Channels — your fixed gifts (deepening)
- Gates — nuances (when basics are solid)
- Variables — advanced level (after several months of practice)
Important: don't try to understand everything at once. HD is an experiential system — each layer is verified in life before moving to the next.
Common Reading Mistakes
1. Focusing on Gates Before Living the Type
Gates are fascinating but intellectual. Type and strategy are visceral. Start with the body, not the head.
2. Interpreting "Undefined" as "Missing"
Undefined centers aren't weaknesses — they're zones of potential wisdom. An undefined Sacral doesn't mean "no energy" — it means "wisdom about others' energy."
3. Comparing Bodygraphs
"They have 7 defined centers and I only have 3" — this comparison is meaningless. More defined centers ≠ better. It's simply a different mechanic.
4. Using HD to Justify Behaviors
"I'm a Manifestor so I don't need to warn people." No — the Manifestor strategy IS to inform. HD explains mechanics, it doesn't give a free pass.
Neurodiversity and Bodygraph Reading
For neuroatypical profiles, certain bodygraph elements have amplified resonance:
- HSP: look at your undefined centers first. That's where your sensitivity is both your gift and vulnerability.
- Gifted: look at your authority. The temptation to use the mind as authority is the #1 gifted trap in HD.
- ADHD: look at your Root and Head Centers. If undefined, part of your "scattering" is conditioning, not ADHD.
- Multipotentialite: look at your profile and Self-G Center. The design often validates multi-direction.
Connection with Shinkofa
Shinkofa transforms the bodygraph into a progressive, interactive experience. Instead of bombarding you with the entire chart at once, Shizen guides you layer by layer — starting with type and strategy, then unlocking subsequent levels at the pace of your experimentation. Each layer is crossed with your MBTI and ND profile for holistic interpretation, not siloed. The goal: making the bodygraph a living tool, not a poster on a wall.
