The 12 Rashis: The Vedic Zodiac in Depth
In Vedic astrology, the rashis (from Sanskrit rashi, meaning "group" or "sign") form the zodiacal wheel on which planetary positions are read. Although their names echo Western signs, their mathematical foundation is radically different — and that difference changes everything for many people.
Sidereal vs Tropical: The Fundamental Distinction
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the equinoxes. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, based on the actual positions of fixed stars.
Due to the precession of the equinoxes — a slow shift of Earth's axis over a 25,920-year cycle — the two zodiacs have drifted apart by approximately 23-24 degrees (called Ayanamsha). In practice, your Vedic sign is often one sign behind your Western sign. A tropical Aries frequently becomes a Vedic Pisces; a tropical Leo may be a Vedic Cancer.
The most widely used Ayanamsha in India is the Lahiri Ayanamsha (officially adopted by the Indian government in 1955). Other systems exist — Krishnamurti, Raman, Yukteshwar — but Lahiri remains the dominant reference.

Is Your Rashi Different from Your Western Sign?
The answer is: probably yes, especially if you were born between the 14th and 20th of the month (transition zone). For others, the approximate rule is:
- Your Lagna (Vedic ascendant) may differ by 1-2 signs from your tropical ascendant
- Your Rashi (Vedic Moon sign) is often 1 sign behind your Western Moon sign
- Your Surya Rashi (Vedic Sun sign) shifts back approximately one sign, especially between the 14th and 20th of the month
In Vedic astrology, the Lagna (ascendant) is generally more important than the Sun sign for defining personality. The Moon (Chandra) governs mind and emotions. The Sun represents the soul (Atma).
The Qualities of Rashis
Chara (Cardinal — movable): Mesha, Karka, Tula, Makara — initiate, move, change Sthira (Fixed — stable): Vrishabha, Simha, Vrishchika, Kumbha — maintain, stabilize, resist Dwiswabhava (Mutable — dual): Mithuna, Kanya, Dhanus, Meena — adapt, transition, bridge
The Shinkofa Connection
Shinkofa uses the Vedic rashi — not the Western sign — as one of the layers of each user's holistic profile. Why? Because the sidereal zodiac reflects the actual positions of constellations at the moment of birth, which often resonates with a different precision for highly sensitive, multipotential, or neurodivergent people who feel their Western sign doesn't quite describe them.
By combining your Lagna (ascendant — the mask and the body), your Chandra Rashi (Moon sign — the mind and emotions), and your Surya Rashi (Sun sign — the soul and deep identity), Shinkofa builds a three-dimensional picture of your nature. This is not a daily horoscope. It is a mapping of who you are — to better understand how you function, how you recharge, and how to use your natural strengths rather than fight against them.
