The 27 Nakshatras: Vedic Lunar Mansions
If rashis are the chapters of the zodiacal book, nakshatras are its paragraphs — more precise, more nuanced, more revealing. These 27 lunar mansions divide the zodiac circle (360 degrees) into equal sections of 13 degrees and 20 minutes each, tracing the path the Moon travels in approximately one day.
Why Nakshatras Surpass Rashis
The Moon travels through an entire rashi in about 2.5 days. It traverses a nakshatra in approximately 1 day. This extra precision allows us to distinguish personalities that the rashi alone cannot differentiate. Two people born under the same Moon sign can have completely different characters if their Moon falls in different nakshatras.
Nakshatras are also at the heart of the dasha system (planetary periods) — it is the Moon's nakshatra at birth that determines which dasha begins your life.
The Birth Nakshatra: Janma Nakshatra
The Janma Nakshatra is the nakshatra in which your Moon is placed at birth. It is your fundamental emotional imprint — your instinctive response to life events, your body memory, your deep nature before conscious processing applies.
The Three Qualities of Nakshatras
Each nakshatra belongs to one of three categories:
- Deva (divine): Sattvic nature, oriented toward spiritual growth
- Manushya (human): Rajasic nature, oriented toward worldly accomplishments
- Rakshasa (demonic): Tamasic nature, oriented toward transformation through trial
These categories are not moral judgments — they describe the path of learning.
The Pada System
Each nakshatra is divided into 4 padas (feet or parts) of 3 degrees 20 minutes each. The padas correspond to the four signs of the navamsha in order:
- Pada 1: Mesha (Aries — Dharma)
- Pada 2: Vrishabha (Taurus — Artha)
- Pada 3: Mithuna (Gemini — Kama)
- Pada 4: Karka (Cancer — Moksha)
Knowing your pada further refines your profile.
